As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough’s population was 3,560, reflecting an increase of 133 (+3.9%) from the 3,427 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 8 (-0.2%) from the 3,435 counted in the 1990 Census.

Merchantville was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 18, 1874, from portions of Centre Township. Portions of the borough were taken to form Pennsauken Township on February 18, 1878. The borough was named for Charles K. Merchant, who owned much of the land that comprises the borough.

One of the borough’s main attractions is its antique shopping district on Maple Avenue. The Merchantville Country Club, founded in 1898, is located on Coventry Avenue.
